Constellation Watercolor Resist (all ages*)

Materials

- Our downloadable Constellation collection (PDF)

- Watercolor paper

- Galaxy colored watercolors

- White crayon or white oil pastel

- Scissors *grown-up helper step

- Paintbrush and water cup

How-To

1. Select one of the constellation pages and print out on computer paper

2. Have your Grown-Up Helper use scissor points to make small holes (or x-shapes) over each star in the constellation

3. Line up your now-holey constellation paper over watercolor paper and grab your white crayon or oil pastel

4. Scribble hard over every hole! Then put constellation paper aside. If you hold up your watercolor paper you will see (just barely!) the white spots

5. Use your favorite galaxy colors (our favorites: purple, dark blue, black) and get them very wet and "goopy" (scientific term) in their watercolor tray

6. Take your watercolor brush and grab as much water as you can then "slop it" (more scientific terms) all over your watercolor paper. When you put water on before colors, this is called "wet on wet painting" and is a great technique for this project

7. Grab those goopy paint colors and get painting! You'll start to see the constellation appear because the watercolor resists the invisible oil (or wax) marks

Materials

- Our downloadable Constellation collection (PDF)

- Glow-in-the-dark stars (often available at a Dollar store or you can purchase here)

- String or yarn

- Small plastic hanger

- Clear tape

How-To

1. Select your choice of constellations from our Constellation collection (PDF) and print it out

2. Count the number of stars and cut that many small pieces of yarn (about 6-12 inches is good)

3. Line up the hanger above your constellation sheet and align the pieces of yarn to the stars then tape the top of the yarn to the hanger (see picture -->)

4. Place your glow stars over the real stars and adhere to yarn with tape

5. After this step, we picked everything up off the paper and then taped AGAIN over the tape on the opposite side so that no "sticky spots" are exposed. Then we carefully trimmed the tape around the stars to make it less visible

6. Cut the bottom of the yarn pieces and hang up in a dark place!
